Do they? Perhaps this is a regional difference (I'm in Germany), but over here the suburbs are tendentially a compromise people have to accept precisely because of the way towns are built. The town centers are too expensive, the countryside is too remote.
Closely interspersing high- and low-density areas would enable people to enjoy both rural and urban lifestyle without many of the current drawbacks. As a ruralite you're closer to the next town, as an urbanite you're only a few steps away from nature.
Also, you can still have mid-density satellite settlements even with delimited cities. I'd argue they would be more livable if they were agglomerated and interspersed though, more similar to village settlements or small towns than modern sprawl.
/shrug that doesn't seem to be what people want there's this valuable resource, in between two spread out cities, that's close to both of them LOTS of people want to live there, and thus the natural response is density you want to prevent that, limiting that location to a few
