Nearby hatchery sells these for $1 each as "Frying Pan Specials". They don't convert feed as efficiently as broilers, but they supposedly forage more effectively. For the cottage farmer, it's probably a wash. They're definitely more interesting than broilers.

We're halfway through raising our first batch, and other than some trouble from a raccoon (which I buried this morning) they've been very robust and trouble-free. It's fun trying to guess the breed as their feathers are coming in.
