two questions (both serious): (a) if the foreigners aren't attending f2f school, why do they need to be here? What's wrong with having them live at home while they study? (b) why is it in the national interest or in the personal interests of Americans to have them here?https://twitter.com/ReichlinMelnick/status/1280207487573069827 …

This is bad. ICE just told students here on student visas that if their school is going online-only this fall, the students must depart the United States and cannot remain through the fall semester. https://www.ice.gov/news/releases/sevp-modifies-temporary-exemptions-nonimmigrant-students-taking-online-courses-during … pic.twitter.com/OfkWRKFZZE

Under the rule ICE announced today, schools like Harvard wouldn't lose tuition from students forced to leave the United States. Students could "attend" classes virtually—in their home country. But if the choice is stay at Harvard or leave the US... many will choose to transfer.

3/ you're saying that college students aren't capable of being awake in the middle of the night? 🤔https://twitter.com/ReichlinMelnick/status/1280212302072086531 …

And of course, as @AbayaMiriam points out, many foreign students come from countries where internet connections might be very spotty, or where US classes might be held in the middle of the night local time. Just going home won't work for those students. https://twitter.com/AbayaMiriam/status/1280211711379804161 …

4/ Reduced Course Load, a per-university policy that can literally be changed with the stroke of a pen, is a given that can't be altered, and therefore US national policy has to change instead? 🤔 this is the "yes, but" game from Games People Playhttps://twitter.com/ReichlinMelnick/status/1280222581451259910 …

ⓘ Dogs don't have thumbs added,

ICE does say students, rather than leave, could "take alternative steps ... such as a reduced course load or appropriate medical leave." But RCL is only available for: - Academic difficulties; - Medical conditions; and - Completion of a course of study. It won't apply for most. pic.twitter.com/vGmpTQYnEJ

5/ > finally, take today's decision... This is a sentence fragment, not an actual point. Take the decision...and what? What are you trying to say here?https://twitter.com/ReichlinMelnick/status/1280230324253921282 …

Finally, take today's decision to kick students out of the US if their school goes online-only into context with other recent attacks on legal immigration in the name of COVID. Just last week Trump expanded a ban on most legal immigration through Dec. 31. https://immigrationimpact.com/2020/06/23/legal-immigration-ban/#.XwOCGyhKhjE …

I can answer the first. A lot of online classes still have live meetings at their usual times (mine did last semester). It would be shitty to take every class with a huge time difference. Some of my classmates on the opposite coast had issues, let alone international students.

A college student isn’t in a particular location merely to receive instruction. They become residents of a community, where they live out their lives, some of which involves receiving instruction. This is true regardless of the student’s citizenship. +

It is no more reasonable to require a student to return to India merely because their school is no longer delivering lectures in person than it would be to require them to return to Kansas. +
