A few generations ago great men LARPed a Rome that probably never existed. For now, even if the America I love was never real I'd still want to try its costume on. But I would not be surprised if I end up wholly agreeing with you down the road.

I hate this because it expresses too clearly that my hold on a piece of reality was utterly mistaken. The moment I read it my heart skipped a beat from the impact of its truth. I gently lay that truth to the side so that I can carry on with a modicum of hope.
