6/ I'm almost 50 and I've been buying books since I was 7 or so. I pruned my collection from ~10,000 to ~5,000 before moving to the farm. ...still have a lot of shelves left to build!

7/ The new shelves go in the 3rd floor east bedroom, north wall, to hold science fiction hardcovers. After that, another set (shallower, and shorter shelf spacing) to hold SF paperbacks on south wall. After that, more for living room #2 encyclopediashttps://twitter.com/cyr_actual/status/1272886620145025034 …

8/ Yes, my design is the same as yours. * 3/4" thick pine wood * 1/4" dado (it's a rabbit if at the END of the plank, a dado if in the center) * glue * pneumatic staple from outside * putty to cover staple hole face frames cut from pine, again glue and staple

9/ apocryphal ; they tell that tale at every university re houses: minimum engineering requirements are something like 30-50 lbs per square foot dead load, and about the same for live loads. A full height bookcase probably exceeds that, but ...https://twitter.com/vongillern/status/1272886800252534787 …

von @vongillernReplying to @MorlockPI don't know if this an apocryphal thing they say on all college campuses, but at Iowa State, they say the library sinks ~7" every year because they forgot to account for the weight of all the books. This hurts because it's my alma mater and an engineering school.#beCareful ;)2 replies 0 retweets 10 likesShow this thread -
10/ ...as long as they're up tight against the wall, they're loading the joists INSANELY close to where the joists land on the top plate of the floor below, and so you get to take advantage of the entire load rating for the FULL ROOM

11/ yeah, I love true craftsmanship - dovetails, fine hardwoods, etc. Kind burns me to do Norm Abrams-for-the-PBS-crowd softwood-and-nailgun stuff but...I've got a job, books to write, bacon to make Maybe I'll make fine mahogany furniture in retirementhttps://twitter.com/The_Petrichory/status/1272889324980273159 …

🍂 The Pectrichory 🍄 @The_PetrichoryReplying to @MorlockPLooking pretty sweet. Sometimes I fall down that rabbit hole of YouTube channels watching the skilled work that goes into Japanese joining techniques that don't take nails or glue and briefly consider the insanity of doing it. It just takes so long though, lol.3 replies 0 retweets 13 likesShow this thread -

13/ Pressure treated ?!?! No, absolutely not. Just regular pine, from a local sawmill. Better price and better quality than from a big box store. https://twitter.com/slatermaus/status/1272895320385622019 …

I don't even know how long one would need to let typical "pond-dried" pressure-treated dry out in stickers if I was going to use it for something dimensionally-stable
