Had an interesting thought just now * a lot of young guys ping me: "hey, how do I get a life like yours?". Answer is "gotta build a lot of capital to buy a place, tools, etc." * one hard part of moving to country is lack of friends / peers - you're an outsider / weirdo >>>

/ in my caffeine-addled imagination, I'm not saying the young guys would loan the landlord tools, but that as they each acquired tools to advance their own lives, they could share them w each other https://twitter.com/SFlamboyante/status/1268921362489450503 …

/ Basically, I guess I'm wondering if a "rural life incubator", where the two services provided are * housing * community of similar folks has any value?pic.twitter.com/aDUOEWEC9c

/ 1-3 months? That's barely enough time to get a tractor stuck in mud and then get it out again ! https://twitter.com/TacticalMinivan/status/1268921907287646214 …

/ I've done a lot of my homesteading while pretty overweight. Down a fair bit recently. So ... can be done either way. Homesteading hobbies help build strength, tho. https://twitter.com/oceanlander/status/1268923672875630594 …

/ well, to be clear, in my conception, it's just a group house that's rented out as an investment property...and the tenants are given the blessing "sure, you can log trees in THIS area, and plant a garden HERE...and MAYBE I can rototill a bit for you" https://twitter.com/DeanBradleySFF/status/1268924153865949184 …

/ ...so if 4 guys moved in and 3 of them decided that they'd rather play vidya than garden ... fine by me. Long as the rent checks clear. The "like minded community" is something THEY bring to the table (or not) for their own benefit (or not). No skin off my nose.

/ getting a lot of [ good natured ] ribbing like this ...and, just to be clear: no, I'm not proposing that guys work on MY land or for me. Just a housing situation, and they can do what they want for themselves. My interaction is "collect rent".https://twitter.com/mr_archenemy/status/1268927281411559424 …

/ yep, yep ...but I'm proposing something much less formal / with less interaction if some SV person buys a 6 bedroom house & rents it to geek friends so that they can all hang out, he's not collecting tribute in open source code or anything...just $ https://twitter.com/octal/status/1268928415102636035 …

/ I used "incubator" as a joke, just to justify putting a picture of Ehrlich Bachmann in there. In reality it's just "group rental house; with some social preselection - THE END".https://twitter.com/TheClarksTale/status/1268928606194941952 …
