Any ideological or moral insistence on zero of something inevitably foments destructive revolutionary urges because even if something is continuously improving, to that mindset "nothing" is being achieved the entire time by normal means. The perfect is the enemy of the good.pic.twitter.com/19tG3nPBPd

yeah but, if forced to bet, would bet on the cars higher baseline is probably the continued existence of kei cars, as well if some enterprising nerd wants to do a deep dive on traffic fatalities in Japan, I'd read it

In the other direction, pedestrian fatalities in the USA went up 40% IIIRC within 2 years of the introduction of the iPhone. /You see that chart a lot in "Ban SUVs" urbanist posts. And I just..... no.

putting a substantial tax on vehicles which lead to much higher fatalities for the same speed of collision is sensible no matter what the driver (or pedestrian) was doing when the collision happened

i looked up the study the data was apparently taken from the death rates are noted as being from "road crashes", that is, including mopeds, motorcycles, and cyclist/pedestrian deaths possible correlation with 1970s French and Japanese preference for scooters and mopeds
