I live in New Hampshire, a state in USA with ~ 1.5 M people. It works pretty well. US was 3 M at time of founding. I'm in favor of much smaller countries, loosely coupled. 30-70 states with a very limited federal government, perhaps

I’d also add that the US Gov isn’t forced to be efficient like smaller governments because it has near limitless money. This leads to a lot featherbedding and moving way beyond core purposes.

Japan did well as well and is 40% the population of the US. I don't think it's about size. But homogeneity? Perhaps.

@patio11 has some great essays on what it's like in Japan. I'd find the culture half amazing, half stultifying. Ferment, history of rebellion, high diversity, high social freedom have both pros and cons.
