Well, since that protest was actually about unjust taxation without representation, I'd say it's still quite different. You get to vote for or against the sales tax... albeit indirectly. And don't forget, it did basically start a very bloody war. Actions have consequences

Also, thinking more about this. I wouldn't have too much of an issue if people looted stores that had the "non-essential" items blocked for purchase. That's protesting the government policy, even though it's a private store.
