I convert gallons to cubic yards by thinking * gallon of water weighs 8 lbs * so ~ 4 kg * so 4 liters * 250 such units in a cubic meter * meter is about a yard * so 250 gallons in a cubic yard units(1) tells me "201.97403" close enough

Heh. I followed up to 'metre is about a yard', then went "no, it's about 1.1, which squared is 1.21, I can't be arsed cubing it, call it 200" ... then read on and went "huh" ;) (but I usually convert via 12" <-> 30cm, because (a) rulers (b) playing both 40k and Titan Legions ;)
