50 years ago, a literal retard could walk into a factory, get a job, and support a family of 5.

3/ Ah, you said 50, not 60, so 1970. ok, avg wages were $6,186.24 equivalent of $40,827 today. Show me how you support a family of 5 on that. I remember the 1970s. They were dirty, the cars broken down ALL the time, and people were so much poorer than today.

I think the problem is for most people that the things that have gotten cheaper are more optional things. Healthcare, education, housing, and food all seem to have gotten more and more expensive. Even used cars are still a fairly substantial investment

healthcare an education are hugely optional most healthcare is worthless most post HS education, same basic tier college (state schools) is fairly affordable, AVERAGE price has gone up, tho, yes re housing: housing QUALITY has hugely increased

Read a bunch of Booker T Washington a while back (highly recommended). One thing that struck me was his advice to buy land and build a house. Ok, good.

You forgot regular trips to Radio Shack to replace tubes in your TV. I bet most people here spend >$250/month on combination of cable TV, internet, cell phones, and streaming services, WHICH DIDN’T EVEN EXIST IN 1970! Point is that straight money comparisons are…difficult.
