1/ every now and then I run across someone who says something idiotic like "I stopped believing in God when <badthing> happened." and I smack my head did you ... did you somehow miss that we live in a fallen world, that evil exists, that people have free will?https://twitter.com/padrebrendon/status/1262734581750513669 …

Our cat lost faith when we took her to the vet. She reflected on it for hours, and there was simply no imaginable reason for us to do that. A loving owner, as intelligent as her, would not do something so cruel and random. QED.

In my sample, It's usually cumulative. People can't reconcile "God is love" with the suffering of existence. They say things like "if God does exist, he's despicable and not worthy of worship."

If I steelman it, I get: 1) God created humanity and all creatures 2) God gave us free will, because without the capacity to do evil, we can't choose virtue and love either, so, ok, that justifies Mongols etc. 3) There are brain parasites that kill kids 4) [faith implodes]

I guess the "fallen world" part is supposed to explain 3? I dunno. I can see how somebody could accept human evil as the price paid for humans to be able to actively be good, but to not be able to square the harm done by non-sentient creatures with a strict creationist outlook.
