1/ tangentially, there's this thing where minorities often pile into a credential harder & LATER than the overculture (e.g. Asian tiger moms drilling kids on violin, which is a trailing signal). Seeing "77% of students are nonwhite" I'm imagining this phenomena, but for collegehttps://twitter.com/St_Rev/status/1261326470124896257 …

Seems pretty correct to me. What this next up coming "badge" or credential will be seems to be open for debate(at least in my mind) but I'd wager it involves tech literacy beyond the public schools level standard of "can you type?"

The progs might be pro-"white" by then. They were pro-"white" in the 1912--1948 period. The Hivemind does not have permanent allies.

If I could give advice to my younger self, I'd tell myself to go to a tech school for a trade as a plumber, electrician, or HVAC.

I've long suspected that a record of accomplishment in a sport that requires especially long and painful training (running a marathon in under 3h30, for example) might eventually substitute for college attendance as a conscientiousness and conformity signal.

A lot of businesses already heavily prefer college athletes, so it wouldn't be that much of a stretch

Stack exchange: A place to demonstrate one's knowledge could eventually morph into credentialed badges and not just a gamification mechanism to get ppl to participate for free.

Right that they’ll try, wrong that it will stick. The productive will always find a way to accurately identify the productive, even if the cargo cult compels empty signaling. Nuance: those who categorically can’t compete will always try to rewrite rules to declare them winners.

but if the unproductive or incompetent are able skirt through the door, they can skate in their role for years before they are discovered, and like a malignant tumor can be very difficult to get rid of

Might need to control for those few remaining cases where college is actually useful as education, rather than just signaling. Otherwise, sounds pretty plausible.
