Seems those practices differ because of build time/cost. Physical engineering takes time & $ to implement the design. Software engineering goes from design to built practically instantly for free. Result is more care preparing in the former, more iteration in the latter.

Yup. IDK how you can look at the uniqueness of Protolabs' capabilities and conclude that manufacturing is an industry with a rapidly improving operational baseline. That's not to say software doesn't have its problems, but we mostly do a good job of getting out of our own way.

Manufacturing's dysfunction isn't the fault of engineers beyond their overly conservative orientation, it's more driven by chronic underinvestment and crappy regulation. The industry shouldn't be allergic to fresh eyes, look how that has turned out for medicine.
