if I were to buy a pistol for self defense, I'd give a fair bit of weight to the NAME of the pistol I'd rather be in court defending myself from charges of manslaughter against a home invader having wielded a "Defender" than a "Raging Judge".

Look at firearm models that are frequently issued to cops. If one of them fits your needs (and many of them are quite good) problem solved. Same with ammunition, for that matter.
