if I were to buy a pistol for self defense, I'd give a fair bit of weight to the NAME of the pistol I'd rather be in court defending myself from charges of manslaughter against a home invader having wielded a "Defender" than a "Raging Judge".

Is there any evidence that this sort of thing has ever been used against someone who made an otherwise 'good shooting'?

It has rarely come up, and not to particular effect. Nonetheless, it creates a potential problem where completely unnecessary. You don’t want to hand a prosecutor the opening “who would choose a Slaughtomatic 40k loaded with Black Talon hollow point razor bullets? a killer!”

Look at firearm models that are frequently issued to cops. If one of them fits your needs (and many of them are quite good) problem solved. Same with ammunition, for that matter.
