One thing that's dismaying about some people's reaction to the Ahmaud Arbery case is that when they consider it, they only put themselves in the role of the vigilantes. "Well, if he'd just listened and stopped..." Why not ALSO put yourself in the role of the jogger?

12/ but folks want to wish away this complexity and * turn two distinct questions (was he breaking the law? were they?) into 1 (was he a thief?) * use the result of "was he a thief?" to justify anything / everything

@sdeslav my initial reaction was probably not the correct one when it comes to what is legal and what is not.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

Seems there is some desire to be okay with the guy dying and thus okay forgiving the guys who killed him? Like the pure object level is "did they kill an 'innocent' man or not?" If not, then let them off the hook even if they were in the wrong otherwise?

My read on it, too. If the dude "had it coming" because he was a thief/ne'er-do-well, then it's okay to excuse vigilantism? Sounds fishy. I mean, maybe if they are right, the charges get lowered a bit, because situation more complex. But I don't think even there it excuses ALL.

This is ghetto ethics. You can't impose a cost on people (by thieving around, increasing insurance costs, decreasing property value, reducing trust) and act offended when they retaliate or defend. Don't be a commie.

Incorrect in both morality & law. You cannot have a civilization where thieves caught in the act are treated with the same considerations as law-abiding productive citizens.

Put another way, in cheesy movie quote form: "A person should know when they have it coming." "Would you? Would I?"
