A little herbicide on that left over root will make your job easier next time. We used a paint brush and crossbow on invasive blackberries stumps. Mostly eradicated. Able to train the ones we wanted to keep.

there is no left over root ; I'm pulling them entirely up

Actually we now prefer dandelions to grass. The bees love them. We put it in our salads, it's wired how western cuisine completely lacks bitter founds in the diet. It's one of the healthiest choices, like bitter almonds, amazing food.

There's a theory that dandelions are good for your lawn because their very long tap roots go deep in the soil and bring nutrients the upper layers lack to the surface. How much stock do you put in it? Seems at least a little plausible, but gardening is fraught with bunk too.
-
sure, they bring nutrients up ... and then use them to grow. I'm capable of putting nutrients down from above, without having dandelions

From what I've read, dandelions are good bee food, among the first plants to provide bees food after the winter. Considering the bee issues worldwide, I do my small part by leaving the dandelions. Can't say the neighbors are happy about it though.
