/ ok, folks want to hear about the great 110 volt to 220 volt Twist Lock Adapter but first we need to talk a bit about how electricity works. Power is measured by the maximum difference in voltage between two copper wires.

/ 110 V is a pair of wires: one that sweeps from +110 V to -110 V, and a second line that is always at 0 V. (not actually true - the peaks are +/- 170 volts, but we use RMS - "root mean square"). So anyway - 2 lines. One sinusoidal, one flat.

/ 220V, which you maybe use for your electric oven, or dryer, or MIG welder, is two lines. Both +/- 110V, but 180° out of phase. So the delta between the lines is 220V. Of course, you can mentally model this as imagining one line as a flat reference and the other +/- 220V

    6. ⓘ Dogs don't have thumbs‏ @MorlockP 7 May 2020

/ It's no more or less true. Just a different reference. So anyway, how does a house get power in, and then put out both 110 and 220V on different circuits?

/ You get three lines from the utility: line A which is +/- 110V, line B, which is the same, but 180° out of phase, and neutral / ground. If you compare A and neutral, you've got a 110V circuit to plug your computer into. B and neutral are also 110V, to plug your TV into.

/ A and B, tho, are 220V apart, and you can plug your dryer into that. If you go to your basement and look at the circuit breaker. Lots of breakers, right? Each one couples either line A with a neutral and sends it out over a black/white/copper triple wire >

/ or does the same with line B and a neutral. It makes no diff in you tap into A or B. The two are out of phase, but that doesn't matter. HOWEVER if you could speed up your perceptions 100x you might see the flourescents in one room pulse at 60HZ out of phase w those in next

/ If you take the cover of the breaker box off, and then take the faceplate off, and then pull a bunch of breakers and look into the base box, you'll see the three lines from the utility entering at the top, and then running vertically down the box. The A and B lines zig zag

/ This means that the topmost breaker on the left side taps into the A line, then the next breaker down taps into the B line, then the next breaker down taps into the A line, etc. What THIS means is that if you get a 220V breaker, which fills TWO slots, it can tap both A & B

/ So if you go in your breaker box and look, the dryer breaker is double sized, and it's not big because "more power"; it's physically big just so that it's wide enough to span both bus bars in the back of the box. OK. So. On with the story.

/ ...except...my wood heat is from an exterior box outside the house which uses electrical power to turn a fan to feed air. And then water is pushed through a pipe by a pump to move that heat into the house. So, I need electricity.

/ I've got a dinky consumer grade 110V generator, I've got gasoline. No problem. I don't have a "transfer switch" installed yet, so ok, small problem. I head to workshop and - working by candle light, wire up an illegal double-ended plug. Flip master breaker >

/ Except... remember how houses have A power and B power? Which bus bar am I feeding? Well, whichever one is connected to the outlet in the workshop I'm back feeding to. Let's call that "A".

/ so ONE bus bar in my breaker box is now energized. Good news, that's the one that feeds the outdoor boiler. The boiler turns on and starts blowing air. ...but no hot water is moving from boiler to house. Why? Investigate.

/ ...ah! The pump that moves hot water is on the "B" bus bar. And so are half the pumps that move hot water around inside the house (other half are on "A"). So I need to energize both A and B bus bars. GAH

/ So, remember how I talked about 220V breakers spanning both A and B bus bar? First I flip all of those off. No electric dryer or well pump. Next: how am I going to feed both busbars from the workshop garage? I could cobble TWO suicide plugs, and find one A outlet & one B

/ ...but...remember what I said about 220V outlets? They connect to both A and B busbars. Aha! So, working by candle light, I build a SECOND suicide cable, cannabalizing parts from my tablesaw plug. This one takes 110V from generator and puts it on BOTH A and B lines of 220

/ ...so now both A and B busbars are energized at 110V vs ground (as they should be) but are 0° out of phase (and not 180° out of phase, as they should be). I plug this in, start the generator ...and heat and lights come back on.
