At least the post-monarchy data sets are generally available. For data on, say, the 1200s, it's mostly what we can sift through propaganda to find. And there's a LOT of character assassination that's been done in the past 200 years on how bad monarchies were.

I've found quite a few Catholics who seem to swing that way on Twitter. I suppose it's understandable if the desire to establish the kingdom of heaven on Earth is your main goal, monarchy would have seemed the way. Generalizing here but it has been an observation

I always swing towards the notion that God didn't want kings or rule via all having a vote if you take the book of Judges in consideration and His reaction to Israel wanting Saul as king. What that would actually look like? I don't know. I'm looking through the mirror darkly.

It doesn't even really handle that problem all that well (bikeshedding). An HOA/POA is democratic and too often tyrannical due to their propensity to attract Karens and other busybodies into their administration.
