The timezone matters less than the baseline competency level and culture. Working with remote people in Australia 16 hours off your time is far easier than working with people 8+ hours off your time...

Oh, yeah, there's lots of reasons it's not the same. But once companies have any 100% remote employees, managers are going to be asked why they're not recruiting globally. The burden of proof will shift. And some of the answers (like "shared culture") might be... sensitive.

I worked for a multi-national with factories all over the world including in China. There's reasons the Chinese plant supplied almost exclusively China.
