Honestly, Great Gatsby is a garbage book. Students could be reading Heinlein's Farmer in the Sky or anything by Gene Wolf (AP English only, obv.)https://twitter.com/sarahemclaugh/status/1254788398453153793 …

OTOH, if they compared "The Logic of Empire" to "The End of Eternity" instead...

I won't argue Gatsby, but Fitzgerald over Heinlein? OMG.

The Great Gatsby was about a murder, and no one cared to investigate because the people involved were above the law, the elite. Fitzgerald witnessed this, and couldn't write about it directly so he used characters and a Jane Austen trope. Who has human teeth for cufflinks?

Heinleins book are geared toward how the future will shift or disturb or confuse or renovate out identities as individuals. He was really good at this, and as it is a juvenile concept, reflected on sexual disphoria as well. Wolfe? His characters were never very compelling.

Those poor kids probably have to read Catcher In the Rye.

I guess I should be thankful that my high school English department disliked Catcher in the Rye and never forced us to read it Other than that my high school English program was outstanding…lots of readings of plays, short stories, poems, and novels AP English was 1 book / wk

Why The Things They Carried? The Great Gatsby is timely, imo. The rich have as much of a mystic and a focus of covetousness as the Gatsby time period.
