My guess before looking at the chart was more intergenerational homes in Italy, so more young people bringing it home and the grandparents getting hit with worse viral load. But that doesn’t explain every European country and Washington.

Many more people have died in Italy, both old and young. The bigger skew towards older people in Italy is probably due to their older population + more exposure of the elderly.

The more likely explanation is differences in reporting standards. Different countries have different standards as to when a death was caused by the virus, as opposed to some other comorbidity.

NYC is a largely verical living city. Everyone uses the same doors handles and elevator buttons and often can't get separation from others. Comparing NYC to to entire counties, etc. ignores the elephant in the room.
