Confess I've never understood the US thing of putting freeways *through* cities rather than around them. Seems inefficient from a traffic flow POV - even where we do have wide-ass roads through city centres they tend to choke up and it's often worth finding an alternate route.

If you look back at the time when the freeways were being planned, you can clearly see how developers internalized expected benefits while externalizing expected costs. Political influence sometimes matters immensely.
