is it for the benefit of mediocre students ... or for the benefit of some of the potential best ones, who can study on their own ? I'd get a law degree if I could do it from home, and I got a near perfect score on the LSAT.

I took the GRE back when it was scored 200-800, IIRC? I got something like 780 / 780 / 770. Don't recall for sure, tho. Could be off a bit.
