Starting to kick around ideas for the cider orchard. A few days with a chainsaw, and assuming 30' spacing and I can fit in about 22 trees on the half acre.pic.twitter.com/vDI3eKtHYy

2/ The big flat area at north end was created 10 or 25 yrs ago, it seems, by bulldozing tons of logging waste, garbage, and piece of Japanese Knotweed. I've picked put the garbage, and am killing the Knotweed. But the western edge slopes down at a VERY steep slope to beaver pond

3/ Thinking I might want to stabilize the slope a bit vs erosion etc. Not going to spend huge money on rip rap (sharp edges rocks). Maybe grass? https://blueseal.com/product/slope-type-44/ …

4/ cider apple maximalism: going with semi-dwarf trees on a 15' center-to-center spacing whew lads, we'll only have to sober up once a year (to harvest apples and brew more hard cider!)pic.twitter.com/rEuxkFKl1N

5/ The eventual density and extent of the actual cider orchard plan likely lies in between these two extremes. Wife discovered that the already-existing trees-with-berries in the SE of the map are wild cherries, and suddenly she's getting VERY protective of her forest.pic.twitter.com/FZUuOT0CqN

7/ current status: surfing various vendors of hard cider apple trees, putting data in a spreadsheet, updating the farm wiki There's room for a max of ~60 trees in the cider orchard location at 15' spacing, but I doubt I'll plant that many this spring (too expensive!)

8/ I have no idea what cider apple varieties I might like, and no idea of what blends work, so I'm leaning towards "track down everything available, buy 1+ of each". oof

Actually laughed out loud at "farm wiki". I thought I might have been the only one. Although mine is a 'farm git repo'. The rest of the family is still readying man pages to figure out how to contribute.

13/ yeah, this isn't an industrial operation ; 15' spacing lets me get between trees either on foot or on a riding mower with a trailer (well, except for the very hilly bits)https://twitter.com/Yardsale_Mind/status/1239285491578499072 …

I like this idea better. 30' spacing is more about getting equipment in & out than what the trees need; you could go 15' & full-sized trees if you're not moving equipment. But I'm a non farmer w/ a doz little fruit trees where my front yard used to be, so don't listen to me.

Cox’s Orange Pippin are an apple variety with a thick waxy skin which was specifically developed to be picked in Autumn and stored in cool dry conditions: hence can be eaten fresh year-round. Also makes nice jam/marmalade.
