fair that it's not literally slavery, but if your choice is "X or poverty" it's also fair that your choice of X is not entirely "free" nor is it super meaningful in that case to say X is in a deep sense your "preference"

Seems like a fair criticism (of using revealed preferences) to point out it's less useful in situations where options are limited, though. In the housing example it may literally not be possible to find a "starter home" in a city for a price relatively equivalent to 20 yrs ago.

The extreme version of that puts one in "learn to code" and "buy a UHaul & move" territory, no? Fair to point out people make choices, those choices are meaningful, should be respected, & people should be responsible for their choices. Also fair to acknowledge avail. choices.
