One clean way to define the left/right split on morals is that both sides would argue that there are particular behaviors that tend to lead to better personal outcomes, but the right is ok with those being non-ergodic and the left is not.

Conservative view: if there's a set of behaviors that's prosocial but sometimes comes at a high personal cost (staying in a bad marriage, going bankrupt, dying in a war), we should expect people to bear that cost. Progressive view is that we should reduce the downside.

And reversed at a national level bc conservatives insist that the US always win as opposed to play a hand as dealt, according to THE RULES, whereas blue is willing to have the US lose, say, Panama, or a trade war, for fairness?
