The Soviets being a great example in the modern age.

Observation: Humans are *somewhat* hierarchal even in the best of times, but when the SHTF they get even more hierarchal. The military is a SHTF institution, so it actually works well there.

The Soviet Union very quickly reintroduced it. Before the civil war was over, I believe.

I think that the republican ideal is not the elimination of hierarchy or even of officers, but simply requiring that all enter as enlisted, and all officers be above entry-level. Even if you have a fast-track special category of enlisted that is designated for officer rank.
-
Of course, I never served in the military--this is more drawn from the experiences of my family and my brother's opinion. But in the corporate world, putting some joker fresh out of college in charge of a division of experienced professionals is often a terrible idea.

Orwell's Homage to Catalonia talks about some Spanish Republican units, either POUM or CNT, that operated w/o officers or hierarchy. They were completely useless in any action beside static defense, and often bad at that.

It worked ok in Starship troopers...perhaps everyone starts at the bottom and the there is an officer track.
-
Notably in Starship Troopers, you only see the Marines (or whatever they are called) who are small units of people in mech suits. I suspect that the navy ships that they base from aren't run quite the same way.

"Anarchists sometimes claim that decentralized, non-authoritarian structures are inherently so much more efficient than centralized authoritarian ones that these principles should be applied to military operations. This is the express route to anarchist martyrdom."

Really there’s 3 issues here: hierarchy (obv needed, exists w/in enlisted ranks), Officer/enlisted divide (probably necessary), & the US military’s current 3 track system for training officers (questionable)
-
You could conceivably have a military hierarchy w/o the officer enlisted divide, eg NCOs leading junior enlisted. Still, I think it makes sense to have officers to avoid the Peter Principle & have young, dynamic leaders kept in check by seasoned subordinates.
