Feel like we could easily do all the research and testing necessary to develop the technologies we would want for a war *without* engaging in actual warfare. Maybe argument could be that wars are the *incentive* to intensify research into tech.

Same with all the tech to get into space/land on the moon. Researched, developed and built here on earth, proving its possible. No launches necessary. Space race was just the incentive for it.

I have a suspicion Europe's constant warring between sovereign peers had the effects of i) keeping population below malthusian limits, ii) driving technological innovation, and most importantly iii) producing a locally aligned martial elite.

So would be massively negative sum on the first order, but massively positive sum on higher orders. Perhaps a principal driving force of great divergence between Europe and land empires. Not sure how correct this take is though.

How do you calculate the benefits of a defensive war? What's the NPV of conquered territory? Is trading X lives for mines producing Y tons of gold ever a positive sum?
