Except for all of those hetero couples where 1 or both was stepping out of the marriage with others. Hemophiliacs, people who had surgery. IV drug users who shared needles. quarantines... a nice word for what some conservatives were calling round them up and let them die out.

Spot on. Unlike coronavirus, HIV/AIDS had a behavioral/lifestyle component that significantly impacted the path of the disease, but we dared not address it. Health care workers had to battle an epidemic while treading a minefield of activists screaming about discrimination.

I believe you, but apparently (cf. replies to NdT tweet) the actual events have been memory-holed and replaced in the public mind with a big fat woozle (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woozle_effect …). Would be nice to locate scans of contemporary West Coast newspaper editorials etc. arguing the issue.
