* Something formal in philosophy * People who take a strong philosophical inspiration from Yudkowsky's sequences * People who take an inspiration from the LW gestalt * People who may never have participated in the site in its heyday but are part of the cultural milieu (me)

Usually when used pejoratively it's pointed at the second definition with the implication that they are slavishly devoted to Yudkowsky's views. This is rarely accurate.

I have yet to read a SneerClub-esque take that doesn't basically boil down to "the nerds figured out how to have social power and I'm very mad"

err...I sometimes sneer a bit at Yud etc but not remotely because they have social power. They have, to a good approximation, none.

disagree. Yud can write an email to [various SV names redacted, but not *only* who you might think] and get money for approximately anything he wants to do. that's social power

that's fundraising anyone can fundraise social power is when you get people, large numbers of them, to behave as you would like them to

well, "writing a check" is how person X wants person Y to behave, no? and it doesn't have to be large numbers - if I can get 1 guy to write a $100k check, that's similar to 100k writing $1 each

yes, certainly that particular instance of "behaving as you want them to" hadn't occurred to me, thanks

it was a question, so no need to get snarky I am legitimately asking - in your conception of it - what sort of X can get Y to do a thing counts as social power and what doesn't voting? writing a check? making a statement in public?
