We are hitting the point that everything he does is a sign of how unChristian/not Catholic he is. Which isn’t doing anyone any favors, really. And I say this as a Catholic who is not his biggest fan.

On the other hand there are an awful lot of heretics and pro-choice people he hasn’t bothered to excommunicate so a that’s where the real rub is in it.

He should have let them do that first. But even if not; Christmas Day? As a Catholic myself, I think we recall mercy and charity are important virtues. In his place, I think I might have asked for some communication first and then excommunicated them in January if need be.
