I agree with Samantha - fantasy is about impossible things that violate the laws of physics, like magic spells, dragons, and women with sufficient upper body strength to hold their own against men in battle.https://twitter.com/say_shannon/status/1213413843365507072 …

2/ Are we talking fencing, where a huge number of artificial rules have been put in place to CREATE this, or are we talking, e.g. HEMA, where people wear armor and swing hard and hit hard?https://twitter.com/The_WarmMachine/status/1213853220730065186 …

Wily Quixote @The_WarmMachineReplying to @MorlockPI've studied swordsmanship, strength matters in a sword fight, but speed, accuracy, and training are bigger factors. Yes, women can use swords, and use them well. I've seen women kick the shit out of men in sparring. Weapons are an equalizer in a fight.6 replies 3 retweets 30 likesShow this thread -
3/ I've got friends who wear plate and scale and swing real steel weapons against real steel armor and helmets, and the sport is dominated by big beefy viking types who can squat / bench / move massive poundages. Knocking people over / swinging hard enough to break bones = win.

4/ We have women-only competitions in running, swimming, weight lifting, basketball, soccer, ... EVERYTHING. Hell, even *** CHESS ***. This is not because men are sexist. It's because evolution is.

6/ yes, I'm willing to say that women can do well in fencing / fancy duels with tons of artificial rules. but the topic is "female fighters in fantasy novels " do orcs acknowledge the point loss when the foil touches their lamé ? https://twitter.com/inviiiscerate/status/1213854299647860736 …

7/ I could imagine an offbeat fantasy novel where orcs DO ! That might even be fun to read! ...but it's the non-central fallacy if we're talking "female swords [ men ? ] in fantasy".

Replying to @MorlockP
Unsolicited personal pet theory: the absence of women in battle had less to do with women's inherent combat ability, but rather that a society that put its women in harms way would be jeopardizing its own survival. Men are expendable, reproductive capacity not so much?
