In the past I've griped about Secular Christmas being weird or dumb. I'm not religious, and while I respect those who are, I have always felt that the trappings of a religious celebration /stripped of the religious part/ was an odd, silly, and tedious exercise. I was wrong.

Well, not /wrong/. But I've changed my mind. I've now come to appreciate and enjoy Secular Christmas for its own sake, rather than just putting up with it for the sake of the religious (for whom Christmas is obviously meaningful and important) and to humor everyone else.

Why the change of heart? I think this year I managed to get less exposure to the crass commercialization of Christmas, so I've been less annoyed by it. But moreso, this year I experienced even more of the truly fun, heartwarming, and joyful parts of Christmas.

We visited dear family that we don't get to see often and had a wonderful visit. We watched the Nutcracker, with my eight-year-old niece dancing in it. We played with their newly-arrived Christmas puppy.

I went to see a old dear friend playing The Ghost of Christmas Present in A Christmas Carol. And I think, like the Grinch seeing so much joy and good spirits around him, my heart grew a few sizes this year.

But also, the past few years have been very difficult. I've been depressed and angry and tired and scared. But earlier this year, I had a revelation - I realized how depressed and angry and tired and scared I've been, and how I'd been affecting those around me.
