I kind of wonder if the post-war era was a particularly WEIRD era born of winning a war, escaping a depression, and being rich off the back of a one-time gimme of everyone else is smashed to pieces

Thinking of the other argument that housing prices are driven by local school quality more than anything else, and that would seem to explain both. If you're already paying through the nose for the kid to go to a good school, participating means getting your money's worth..

Confusing that there'd be less interaction with neighbors, though. Would expect people would have connections via their kids' friends if nothing else.
