3/ I contributed to another anthology (well, TRIED to), by (a) seeing it announced, (b - f) as above, (g) having them sit on the anthology / stall for almost 2 yrs (h) telling them I was yanking the story, (i) self-publishing it myself three weeks later, (j) selling 300 copies

4/ My two pieces of advice are: (a) write, write, write, write, write. Be horrified and unhappy with your 1st draft. Throw it away. Start over. Be horrified by your 2nd draft. Throw it away. Keep polishing until it's BETTER than what bookstores sell (b) make writer frens
