My observation is that it can work, but relationships gain complexity geometrically, a complication for each combination of people. If you double the number of people you have quadrupled the amount of effort it will take to make it work.

If your marriage is held together by uncommon means (position of power, great wealth/business between two families, celebrity status), poly can work. If your marriage is held together by intimate love and family bonds, poly is guaranteed to ruin it. I've not seen an exception
