3/ As a libertarian, I 100% support the rights of poly folks to practice poly. And maybe, given human biodiversity, some folks are wired for it. I'm not arguing [ here ] "poly is bad". I'm arguing "arguments for poly being good are bad".

Obviously the cheese thing is facile. But the whole "if you want a gf/wife, you'll tolerate it". IDK, maybe because I'm old(er) and married, but it can't be all that bad out there.

8/ By age 14 or 15 I was starting to see just how dumb a lot of the ideas espoused by the "smart" viewpoint characters were. That's when I started to suspect - though I couldn't explain in detail - that "kinda smart" people could be really dumb.

10/ I might be confused, and it could be his father, Milton Friedman. And it's not on poly so much as on the utility of specialization to learn one spouse's utility function and deliver that product. Instead of going after some dumb Reddit cheese analogy you can consider the case that your spouse's utility function can't be satisfied by a single partner (eg, it includes both "predictable security" and "unpredictable sexual novelty"). Is double murder really your only answer?

13/ I've seen poly "work" a few times in former case - which seems far worse than it not working. I subscribe to @Spivonomist 's concept or codification of "euvoluntary trade", specifically (6) neither party coerced by circumstance; the disparity in BATNAs is not "too large"https://twitter.com/FamishedDragon/status/1202317591332569088 …

If your marriage is held together by uncommon means (position of power, great wealth/business between two families, celebrity status), poly can work. If your marriage is held together by intimate love and family bonds, poly is guaranteed to ruin it. I've not seen an exception

14/ Maybe it also works in non-coercive situations ; I've got a few friends / acquaintances who say that they seem to be wired for it, and I have no reason to doubt them. So I'm talking specifically about the "coercion" subset of "works" here.

if someone's utility function can't be satisfied in monogamy it's on them to be up-front about that fact and refrain from entering a relationship with someone who is extremely determined on monogamy (likewise the converse)
