The awards are largely cordycepted these days, but @seananmcguire is a great author and she deserves this, and would deserve it back before c. 2005 when the Hugos were about merit not ideology and demographics.https://twitter.com/Hugo_Book_Club/status/1037731387069980672 …

This year, @seananmcguire became just the seventh author to have been on a #HugoAward shortlist in a fiction category 10 times by the age of 40. #Worldcon2018 The others? Robert Silverberg, Larry Niven, @GRRMspeaking, John Varley, Orson Scott Card and Michael A. Burstein. pic.twitter.com/1zvh8A15Yb

2/ I agree - many would argue that. To rebut them, I would ... point to the works that have won the Hugos over the last ~ 15 years. Which is sort of like shooting a fly with a howitzer, because OUCH.https://twitter.com/TGoodrumVA/status/1201892225845776384 …

Many would argue that the Hugo's are still about merit, not ideology and demographics. Fortunately the infection of crap that is the Rapid Puppy's has died down.

There's been some pretty fantastic winners in the last 15 years. Just in the Novel category, we've had Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, Jemisin's Broken Earth trilogy(!), The City & the City, Ancillary Justice, Redshirts, and The Graveyard Book.

4/ Now, if the "Hugo Award for Best Novel" wants to be the paralympics - the best OF THOSE WHO MEET CERTAIN ELIBIGILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR WOKENESS - ok, fine. ...and that's what it's been for 10-15 years now.

ⓘ Dogs don't have thumbs Retweeted Seanan McGuire

5/ Given that men wrote 90-95% of all science fiction for several decades, no, it's not surprising that we had runs of several men in a row winning. But since women write ~ 40% of SF/F today, a 10 year winning streak is insanely unlikely.https://twitter.com/seananmcguire/status/1201900647227871234 …

If you consider John Scalzi not to be an American man, your bigotry is showing. Also, I can find you several similar runs of just men from earlier in the history of the awards. Were those equally ideologically motivated?
