We certainly haven't torn down all of our 19th c buildings, but we do tend to cycle more quickly than .eu I believe

The Merrimack river in Manchester NH (named after Manchester, England, because textile) is lined with them. In the mid 80s I worked in Jefferson Mill, the one with the clock tower, for college money, renovating floors for technology firms. Wound the clock one Friday afternoon.

On week I was given the task of removing all the window weights on the 4th floor. Easily 100 windows with century-old granite weights that I simply cut the rope from, stacked on a cart and wheeled into a dark corner of the basement. They're probably still right where I left them.
