Help me out science-&-reason Twitter: What's it called when a piece of information that means/signals one specific thing is turned into a piece of info that can mean various things, thus muddying the formerly clear signal of "A means A" into "A might mean A, B, C, D, or E"?

This is a bit like Pinker on indirect speech -- how it preserves relationships when we have plausible deniability about what's being asked of us. ("Wanna come up and see my etchings?", for example.)
