1/ I'm reminded of one of the various reasons I'm glad to no longer be running a firm - fighting with employees to get them to do things. Once I cleaned up a storage room, hauled 3/4 of it to the dumpster, asked two shipping clerks to help w final 1/4. >>>https://twitter.com/hmmlowe/status/1196569217832632321 …

Love this paper on caste identity and labour supply by Suanna Oh (https://www.suannaoh.com/home ): almost half of the workers refuse to do a 10-minute caste-incongruent task even when offered 10x their daily wage! pic.twitter.com/VJE8pG0MRA

this mindset is utterly bizarre to me my company has six guys at it (I'm not the boss) and, no matter if your job title is "software engineer", if the storage closet needs cleaning out you clean it

I dunno, if you hire someone to do job X (which they enjoy) and then turn around and tell them to do job Y (which they hate), they are likely to complain. Make it clear when you hire them, I guess.

I don't get this mindset I wasn't hired to write software, I was hired to help the enterprise succeed (mostly by writing software) if there's something that needs done to that end, you just do it

working someplace where I feel like I'm part of a team = the mindset you describe, will pitch in to do anything that needs doing (although I've learned to be preemptively vocal when it's something that I'm not good at) (this is my current work environment) by contrast...

...working somewhere as a cog in the machine, decision-makers don't give a fuck about me? I'll do what I need to do to keep the money flowing, and that's about it. above and beyond performance is something the org earns from me (I never want to work at a place like that again)

there's also a significant difference between having stuff foisted onto you as a silent, unpaid expansion of your duties, versus a situation where everyone has to make a big push to get something done

.@LibertyFarmNH makes the point that when you're a startup founder / coder / etc you can scrub a toilet or take out trash and not have anyone think "ah, that's his status level - trash hauler", but when you're ONE HALF OF A STEP above that, people might think you are, so ...

it's an apparent human universal but I just truly don't get the urge to disdain people who do hard, unpleasant, tedious work my instinctive reaction is more like "thank you so much for doing this so I don't have to"

perhaps one of the benefits of charismatic confidence is that such a person can do whatever makes sense w/o being so constrained by concerns about status signaling. arguably moving up the signaling stack — *how* you do being more important than *what* you do — expands optionality
