A local indie bookstore where they *know you* and you use a lot is GREAT, and beats B & N easily except maybe on price. But if I'm in a new place with no idea of reputation, gonna hit a chain up every time. AirBnB, only if the price is actually better.

But that's because I'd literally stay in a Japanese-style pod hotel to save money if any towns had the option.

I was on board with you until you said B&N. Maybe ca. 1999 barnes and noble. Now the one in my town is just a bunch of kindles, toys, cookbooks, action figures, star wars merch, manga, with a few books on the perimeter.

My town used to be all about the “Mom and Pop” establishments, and business here was a draaaaaag. Now that we have some chains, we can get nice stuff. People are happier.
