36/ FSP hippie: you should plant your corn 4 feet underground me: excuse me? FSP H: yeah, my dad says that's what the Hop indians do. Because moisture. me: uh...well, it's pretty moist here, so... FSP H: no, it's better me: I...I really don't think that works. See, >>>

37/ me: ...every seed is a little nanotech factory that has machinery to build a plant, and also an initial food store. The seed has to build enough plant to get above ground using just the calories in the seed, because it gets no light for photosynthesis until then.

38/ FSP H: yeah, but the Hopi do it me: you learned this from the Hopi? FSP H: no, from my dad. He's a bit of a hobby farmer, like you. me: REALLY? And...does his farm work well? FSP H: oh, no, it's a disaster ; his crops usually fail me:pic.twitter.com/M616M3OpAZ

39/ years later I figured out the kernel of insanity turns out that Hopi had to deal with a drying wind, so instead of raised beds, they built bathtub like DEPRESSED beds. Dig a trench 4' wide by 10' long. Then plant seeds in the bottom of that. ...and plant them 1/2" deep

40/ Somewhere along the line, twixt the Hopi and FSP hippie's dad, perhaps, or maybe between FSP H D and FSP H, the "four feet deep" detail got connected not to the BED but to the SEED. Sigh.

43/ Yes, strongly agree that the bang for the buck is prepackaged food in the basement. Not sure what I'd suggest - maybe some kits from Costco ? Plus standard canned stuff from the supermarket ?https://twitter.com/robkroese/status/1197942337294553089 …

You want lots of dried food. Canned food as well, but dried food is more space efficient and I believe keeps longer. You need water of course, but without water in plenty you're dead anyway. I can imagine having some MREs stocked as well, but they're really only for in-a-pinch.

Yes, we have years of dried and canned food. And MREs. And two wells. And a farm.

I think the real survival plan for someone who isn't a farmer is to survive long enough for things to stabilize, and some form of feeding supply to form. That means both contact with someone who farms enough to feed more than their own family... and enough people to die off.

Without technology and modern transportation, farming will not feed nearly as many people. Anyone who survives will have to live long enough to be there when the supply and demand stabilize.
