long thread about why any *substantial* civilizational collapse will very quickly become a complete collapse I bet Our civilization is pretty robust within limits but past those limits (who knows where they are) its some kind of negative foomhttps://twitter.com/MorlockP/status/1197857957192568837 …

Anything local, no matter how severe, is but a scratch. We take the hit, recover, and move on. Mankind's engine of prosperity continues to turn. Anything global of any appreciable severity for any appreciable duration and it's game over, for all of us, forever.

eh it's bistable -- above some level of available resources, you've got productive growth, like current; below that level things start collapsing as logistics fail, and you regress a lot; but there's a level below that where small-scale individual resilience takes control again

where's the limit of collapse? how far down do you get before you can be locally self-sufficient again, and things are sustainable? hard to say, but I don't think it's down at "game over, for all of us, forever"

(related: in a dark age, you don't normally lose that much technological knowledge you lose resource capacity, and thus can't do things you used to be able to; but the technological sophistication tends to stay)

I'd guess that happened locally, but not globally easy to forget, but the Romans were actually a good deal less technologically sophisticated than the medievals, even in the early period where medievals' institutional sophistication was less
