I'd recommend doing like the Mormon's do — large pantry full of canned and dry goods that you use on a regular basis, constantly restocked and rotated so that you always have surplus but don't let anything sit for ages and ages

we've already done the basic bitch stuff of saving money and having a few days of water, food, and other necessities. basically anything lasting longer than ~3 days would be a big issue, anything shorter than that we're fine
