In a full SHTF situation one should be more concerned with power (that grows out of the barrel of a gun) than with farming. But in a strange peaceful supermarket-less Utopia, I bet people can do well on the sea shore, with a few acres of fruit trees and a sailboat.

Thanks for an assessment of how naive farmers would fare after SHTF. Friends promoted the idea of marrying hydroponics. There is a need to repair tools and maintain fairly complex electronic and mechanical systems. In today's throwaway tech environment how could it work?

Unless or until there are practical ways to greatly reduce or eliminate the Darwinism and supply chain issues (e.g., through A.I. and nanotech) very few people who aren't already subsistence farmers would survive. Atomically Precise Manufacturing might someday supply the nano.

Sounds like you're saying that in a complete collapse / civ restart situation, arable farming is too high-tech. Pastoralism may be the outcome.
-
Historical collapses have only gone down as far as subsistence farming, but that was where the fallen culture was still doing that farming even at its peak. Without a population of low-tech agriculturalists, the techniques can't be recreated in mere decades.

There is a tree-based farming system where you cut down the tree, hollow out the trunk like a canoe, drill drainage holes, and use it as a giant biodegradable planter. There's a lot of timberland with dying trees these days due to Global Baking.
