I have a son who is autistic. A paddle would have inflamed things. An isolattion Room is just another word of ‘sensory room’ that they use at his therapeutic school. (Not defending the school in the story, just saying there’s more to it).

An Autistic kid will not receive the signal “this is bad, stop” from a paddle. When really acting up their brain is firing off in all directions. An isolation room minimizes distractions/sensory input to help them calm down.
