I think it's probably a common white collar guy anxiety thing to have tradesmen over to the house and worry that these are Rugged Real Men and one is being Silently Judged for being Soft and Pampered. At least, I hope so, because that's how I often feel.

We had a guy install AC with an anti-allergen filter about five years ago. I’ve done all the maintenance myself but when I approached him for advice about a single thermostat to run the AC and our gas furnace, NGL, I was a little annoyed at his assumption.

I say, “hey, I wanted to ask—“ “You haven’t changed your filters, have you?” (Condescending grin) Me, annoyed: “Wait, what? No, I’ve changed the filters, the UV bulbs, and cleaned the condenser every spring.” Total 180 shift in attitude from there.
